This is the case with Russia Leather, long regarded as the noblest of leathers, whose astonishing properties, amazing smell, and special grain have forged its legend.
On the evening of November 10th, 1786, just south off the English coast, the Captain of the Metta Catharina Von Flensburg gave order to reach Plymouth Harbor as quickly as possible for shelter. On board, a large shipment of hemp and reindeer leather bound for the Republic of Genoa.
Despite seemingly safe conditions, a strong wind would cause shipwreck, leaving its precious cargo forever lost in the depths of the English Channel … Or not.
200 years later, a team of archaeologists came upon the ship by pure coincidence during a diving mission. The leathers unearthed were, amazingly, intact, thus giving birth to the legend of Russia Leather…
